Overlooking the Petanu River gorge, the most luxurious villas perched atop a river ridge, Viceroy Bali is a family owned resort in the arty town of Ubud.
The serenity begins as you drive in the small roadways to reach Viceroy Bali- both side of the roads are flanked by rice fields with little huts in the middle of the field – the striking green contrasting the pink blue sky – you know you are in a tranquil setting!
Viceroy bali – absolutely no affiliation with the other Viceroy Hotels – is privately owned by a Austrian/Australian couple, Otto and Margaret, who visited Bali in 2002 and fell in love with the people and Ubud, decided to build a resort that encompasses both their passion in building a eco-resort that feels seamless and appears to be part of the surroundings than disrupting it. This aesthetic is what pulls us to this place. The 25 villas are hanging on the edges of the mountain with villas overlooking the tropical valley and each comes with a private pool and views to die for.
A resort for the romantics
For those seeking all things exclusive, exotic and elegant — you ‘re in the right place, the area was once favored as a retreat for the royals, providing a secluded haven above Bali’s Valley of the Kings. The dreamy nature of the resort attracts people who are in love with life and with each other. (hey, you are in Bali – it’s after all the queen of the wedding venues) The newly weds or the ever-on-a-honeymoon couple are attracted to the pristine beauty of Viceroy Bali, which fits their honeymoon bill perfectly for their first vacation together. Infact Viceory Bali was awarded “Best luxury honeymoon hotel in Asia‟ by World Luxury Hotel Awards recently.
The resort’s highlight is the sublime infinity pool with mesmerizing views of the valley below — no better place to cuddle with your beau and order drinks from the swim-up bar, that pretty much sums up happily ever-after!
While you are at it, here are few more things that you can do, while living the dream of a vacation: a private dinner in your villa under the stars, a super sexy Rose Petal bath and as if that wasn’t enough, their day spa Lembah provides a special couples body treatment by a certified Swiss therapist who combines their Western knowledge with traditional Balinese wellness techniques to make you both feel the uber relaxed and rejuvenated.
Although Viceroy Bali has done everything possible to wow you indoors — the real star of the place is the nature that surrounds you – verdant vistas, playful monkeys, and a scent of a far far exotic atmosphere – that plays so well in harmony transporting you to a peaceful place.
The resort is on the steep side of a mountain and the villas are spread out vertically on different levels, its a thrill in itself to ride in the resort golf-carts driven by the skillful bunch who can tame every nook and cranny in the resort grounds.
Designed by the Indonesian architect Ketut Mahardika and co-owner/designer Margaret Bainbridge – the style of the resort is a mix of Balinese traditional architecture with European influences featuring, Alang-alang thatch-roofed pavilions, polished concrete walls, marble floors, dark wood furniture and stone-carvings. Indigenous art graces the resort throughout, from the villas to the stunning two-story, split level lobby, with its three-meter-wide hand-carved mural depicting traditional Balinese dancers.
The resort offers five villa categories showcasing spacious yet intimate spaces, each with its own pool, traditional Balinese design and all the modern amenities such as LED television and Bose iPod sound system. Relax in your private pool or indulge in a long bath in your jacuzzi or read a book in your balé, there is a lot to do in Ubud, but not enjoying this perfect piece of heaven will be a mistake you don’t want to make.
Wake up early, enjoy the sounds of the water gushing beneath you, feel the crispness of the clean air, enjoy the sights of the moving mist and dew droplets letting go, as the warm rays of the sun slowly sets in.
