Playland Motel: A Hotel By Artists In Rockaway Beach

Playland-Motel

Enjoy Art Installations? Like the Beach? If the answer is Yes, You will love to stay at the new ‘Playland Motel’ in the Rockaways.

The Summer of 2013 saw a new wave of Artists and Designers moving their attention to the Rockaways after Hurricane Sandy hit the town and rummaged a good part of it. And the opening of the Playland Motel really turned heads for this part of the NY Coast.

Robin Scott and Jamie Wiseman, of NYC Entertainment fame and Diego Galarza and Eduardo Suarez, owners of  Brooklyn restaurants, El Almacen and Rosarito Fish Shack—decided to open a concept Hotel, called the Playland Motel on Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Queens.

A beach hangout, a hotel which sits in an renovated old building with a white washed shuttered facade that gives us very little clue of the awesomeness inside. The 12 rooms in the Playland Motel are artistic installations which are mostly handmade by local and international designers.

This month’s Destination Design stays within the states and lands in New York’s own Rockaway Beach at a recently opened, campy destination called Playland Motel. Full of BeatsEats, and Sleeps, this motel took an early 19th Century building and restored it with the help of twelve prominent designers and artists who designed individual rooms with their own aesthetic. The results are a designer motel catering to a younger crowd looking for a super fun getaway at the hotel, motel, Holiday Inn. (I dare you not to sing it.)
