I may just be bold and claim that this has to be the BEST picnic spot in the whole of United States.
Location: Channel Islands
Close to the California mainland, yet worlds apart, encompasses five remarkable islands (Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara). Isolation over thousands of years has created an habitat for unique animals, and archeological resources found nowhere else on Earth.
You can experience coastal southern California as it once was.
We had booked a ferry from Island Packers, Ventura to go here and depending on your preference and schedules, you can choose the island you want to visit. From Los Angeles, it took us approx. 90 mins to Ventura and the ferry ride to Santa Cruz was little less than 2 hours.
If seeing sea animals are a bonus, then you get to watch Sea Lions, Dolphins and occasionally in-season Orcas.
Hiked for about 2 miles before we found this spot on top of the mountain and decided to plonk there for the rest of the afternoon.
You can see the guy in the far right creating these balancing rocks.
When you are this relaxed, nothing else matters.
