You like the outdoors, you like the sound of chirping birds and gushing waters, but are picky about the comfort of sleeping in make-shift tents or the food you eat and the horrid porta-potties, then you my friend, should become a fan of glamping!
Meet Camp Orenda, an all-inclusive back-country retreat, filled with all the awesomeness of camping minus all the hardships you have to go through. Camp Orenda is a dream project of David Webb, who grew up here and after many years of corporate boredom, he decided to build a luxury camp in Johnsburg in the Adirondacks, a few miles away from the famous Lake George. And about four hours from New York City.
With only 5 canvas-cabins, David has created a tranquil place that provides peace, quiet and the joy the same way the camp provided him all his childhood years. It is a family owned 40-acre mountain property, where you will have total access to beautiful mountain vistas, rivers, and the rugged Adirondack Mountains.
The all-inclusive experience begins with a welcome email to get to know you, your agenda in the Adirondacks, activities you like, food preferences, etc. It is 190$/person and all the meals, canoes, kayaks, guided hiking, some intro into fireside gourmet cooking and archery are included! There is even a massage service if you need one for an additional charge.
The rustic design of the open-air dining room and the gathering room are true to the environment, blends seamlessly to the open area around it. The evening social hour begins in these spaces, that are charmingly lit up with candles and lanterns. Here is where you meet your fellow guests, hosts and share your stories from the day.
“I wanted to share everything I learned as a kid with people who might not necessarily have the skill set or the desire (to camp traditionally),” Webb said. “And I wanted to create something where people could come up and have really wonderful, healthy gourmet foods made for them.”
Bring you own bottle of wine or make cocktails with fresh ingredients you find in their kitchen garden. Freshly baked cookies are served as tea-time snack. Or wait until dusk to enjoy the slow cooked pulled pork served on a fresh baked potato roll or Three Cheese Tortellini and Stuffed Crimini Mushrooms with local goat cheese.
“Having a wonderful meal by a creek in the evening by candlelight with a bottle of wine or a beer? That’s the recipe.”
Restrooms with storage for your essentials.
Outdoor showers are one of our favorite things about eco-resorts and at the Camp, you do get to soak yourself while gazing at the sky.
Wind down by the streams, in the warmth of the firewood counting the stars above you. And like Webb recommends, don’t be idle while you are at the Camp, or treat it as a resort and laze around in these hammocks. There is SO much to do in the mountains, use the camp as a base and enjoy what mother nature has given the Adirondacks.
The property is in front of this waterfalls, pack a picnic and enjoy a swim in this beautiful setting.
In the nearby Garnet Lake is where you can get Orenda to launch a canoe for you.
Open from May to October, Camp Orenda is must-go if you crave for a stress-free and recreation-filled break.
